Maine Makes Explicitly Transphobic Bill

Maine HP 682 An Act to Ban Biological Males from Participating in Women’s Sports is a very explicit attempt at discriminating against trans women. This bill prohibits trans women from participating in school sports teams by permitting only designated females participation in female/girls/women’s teams. HP 682 allows students to dispute their exclusion by providing a doctor’s note that is based upon reproductive organs, naturally occurring testosterone, and chromosomes.

How does this bill effect students who are intersex? Intersexuality is a term used to describe people who don’t fit into the binary of male or female. Sex is dependent on a number of biological characteristics including genitalia, hormones, internal anatomy, and chromosomes. Many people like to claim that intersex is such a rare occasion that it’s irrelevant, but someone being intersex is as common as someone having red hair.
