The European Commission responds

Thank you for signing the petition No Big Brother in my Pocket, to call the European Commission out on its frightening plans to require spyware to be installed into every digital device, as an ill-conceived measure to combat child abuse.

We've just received a response from the Commission, so we're writing to let you know about it. You can read the entire letter here, but the only part of it that is actually relevant to the points we made is as follows:

I also would like to stress that encryption is an important means of protecting confidentiality and is widely recognised as an essential tool for security and trust in open networks. However, the use of encryption should be without prejudice to the powers of competent authorities to safeguard national security and to prevent, investigate, detect and prosecute criminal offences, in accordance with the procedures, conditions and safeguards set forth by law and in compliance with Fundamental Rights.

This response completely misses the point. There is no way to suspend end-to-end encryption only for the purposes of prosecuting crime. If strong encryption is lost, then it is lost for everyone. The solution to the misuse of encrypted communications to send abuse images is not to eliminate encryption, but to invest in prevention programs.

In other words, our initial concerns about the proposal remain, and we could use your help to take our campaign to the next level. Here's how you can do that:

  1. Please spread the word about our campaign. You can do that by sharing any of our tweets about the campaign, or by sharing this link to take action
  2. To make this a formal petition to the European Parliament, we need to partner with a European resident who has signed the petition. If you live in Europe, please contact us so that we can tell you what's needed.
  3. Please donate to support our work, or become a member. Prostasia Foundation is the only nonprofit advocacy group that stands up for human rights in the field of child protection, and your support goes a long way.

Thanks again for your support on this vital issue. With your help, we are committed to defeating this draconian proposal, and to pursuing more evidence-based solutions to child sexual abuse.
