The Bay Area charity premiere of Butterfly Kisses will be held on August 18
Butterfly Kisses won the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the Berlinale 2017
San Francisco — July 22, 2019 — Local child protection organization Prostasia Foundation will be screening the award-winning film Butterfly Kisses at Oakland's New Parkway Theater on August 18.
Butterfly Kisses tells the story of Jake and his friends as they navigate a turbulent teenage world of drugs, drink, and sex in and around a London tower block. Jake has a dark secret which pushes him deeper and deeper into a sense of isolation. Will anyone close to Jake catch on to his secret obsession before he harms himself or others?
Director Rafael Kapelinski chose to shoot the film in a moody black and white, pairing it with a solemn organ score from composer Nathan Klein. "What makes Butterfly Kisses different is the perspective of the telling," Kapelinski said. "Jake, the protagonist, is merely a teenager, and yet he must face the demons that we usually associate with much older age."
Prostasia Foundation's Executive Director, Jeremy Malcolm, said, "We selected this film because of its daring but sensitive treatment of a topical and taboo topic." The foundation is dedicated to the prevention of child sexual abuse, and will be celebrating its first anniversary at this screening.
Butterfly Kisses won the Crystal Bear in the Generation 14 Plus section at the Berlin Film Festival in 2017, awarded by a youth jury. Proceeds of this Bay Area premiere screening of the film will go to charity.
